Pinyon has provided wetland and stream mitigation monitoring services for the Montana Department of Transportation for more than 12 years, supporting a portfolio of 18 mitigation sites located throughout Montana. Our staff has led monitoring, performance evaluation, and regulatory reporting efforts for projects ranging from small wetland mitigation sites to large-scale stream and floodplain restoration projects.
Monitoring activities have included wetland delineations, functional assessments, vegetation establishment evaluations, groundwater monitoring, stream channel assessments, wildlife observations, noxious weed inventories, and infrastructure inspections. Pinyon prepares annual monitoring reports documenting site performance, ecological function, maintenance needs, and progress toward achievement of mitigation objectives and credit release milestones. These reports provide the technical basis for agency review and evaluation of mitigation success.
This long-term program has provided our team with firsthand knowledge of how mitigation sites perform over time and the factors that contribute to successful credit generation, performance standard attainment, and long-term ecological sustainability. By evaluating mitigation outcomes across a diverse portfolio of restoration projects, our team has developed a practical understanding of what restoration approaches consistently succeed, where common challenges occur, and how monitoring data can be used to support adaptive management and regulatory compliance.
