Pinyon supports Butala Construction Company in addressing complex legacy environmental compliance issues at the Smeltertown Superfund Site north of Salida, Colorado. Following a Notice of Violation related to restrictive land use covenants and domestic well development, Pinyon led comprehensive site characterization efforts for residential and adjacent properties, including development of QAPPs and SAPs, soil and groundwater investigations, SCRIBE-compatible data deliverables, and support for an Order on Consent requiring a Remedial Investigation Addendum, Focused Feasibility Study, and Human and Ecological Risk Assessment. Throughout, Pinyon has emphasized transparent, collaborative engagement with Butala, regulatory agencies, and legal counsel to move the project toward defensible, long-term compliance solutions.
As Butala’s trusted environmental partner, Pinyon’s role has expanded to include compliance support for active mine operations, including discharge monitoring and reporting, a year-long source evaluation study, and wetland and Section 404 permitting. Our biological resources and landscape architecture teams developed a mitigation and monitoring plan to realign drainage ditches, reduce contact with historic smelter slag, restore and create high-functioning wetlands, and support permit compliance. This integrated approach leverages Pinyon’s multidisciplinary expertise to manage risk, protect water quality and ecological resources, and deliver practical, regulator-approved outcomes on a highly scrutinized Superfund site.
